Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use this metadata viewer on mobile devices?
Oh yeah. The PDF tool works on desktop and mobile browsers. Please note that very large PDFs will load a lot faster on desktop/laptop devices as they generally have more available resources for processing files.
Does this tool upload my PDF to a server?
Nope. It never goes to our server. The PDF Metadata Viewer works entirely in your browser. Your file never leaves your device. We never see your document.
What metadata information can the viewer display?
Our viewer displays comprehensive metadata including document properties (title, author, subject, keywords), timestamps (creation date, modification date), application details (creator software, PDF producer), PDF version, page count, file size, security settings, and custom metadata fields. You'll also see XMP metadata if present, which can include copyright information, licensing details, and extended document properties.
Why on earth would people need to view PDF metadata?
There are many practical reasons somebody might want to read PDF metadata. They might want to verify the author of a document, to validate the authenticity of the document, or to find out when it was created. They also might just want to know exactly what metadata information is on a document before sharing it. Some businesses must also make sure that the metadata is properly written for compliance auditing and document management workflows and such.
What PDF file formats/versions are supported?
Our tool supports all standard PDF formats and versions, from PDF 1.0 through the latest PDF 2.0 specifications. This includes PDFs created by any software including Adobe Acrobat, Microsoft Office, LibreOffice, online converters, and other PDF generation tools.
Do I need to install any special software to view the metadata?
No installation is required. The PDF Metadata Reader is a completely 100% web-based tool that runs directly in your browser. Just select a PDF file, and view the metadata info right away. This PDF metatag viewer works on most any device with a modern web browser.
Is there a file size limit to PDFs that can be read?
Since all the PDF processing happens in your browser, the practical limit depends on your device's available memory. Most average sized PDF documents, even those hundreds of pages in length, will work without any issues. Extremely large files (over 100MB) may take longer to process or you could possibly encounter memory limitations on some devices.
Will this thing work on password-protected PDFs?
The tool can extract some basic file-level metadata from encrypted PDFs, but full metadata access requires the document to be unencrypted.
